Thoughts from the Furniture Market
January 23rd, 2010 by adminThe Tupelo Furniture Market is the 2nd largest furniture buying event in the US; second only to the Highpoint show in North Carolina. Six huge buildings showcase the work of thousands of craftsman from hundreds of companies - all hoping for the attention of the hundreds of buyers arriving from all over the country.
It has the combined air of a trade show and a county fair with plenty of jewelry booths combined with highly sophisticated furniture displays. Why is ADC Integrated Systems here? Because we supply the data gathering equipment and systems for many of the largest furniture manufacturers in the Southeast. ADC has designed and installed wireless networking in over 8 million square feet of manufacturing and distribution space .
But what I notice as I blog using a laptop and wireless connection is that all the company salespeople are using order pads (or even just yellow note pads) to document what buyers are ordering.
With the a wireless backbone already in place, it would be an easy thing to use a tablet PC (like the Panasonic H1) to enter orders directly into their manufacturing software.
This approach would speed order entry and eliminate errors resulting from hand keying the orders into the system after Market was over.
I guess I should suggest it . . .
