Bar code symbols are each designed to be printed with certain specifications; that is with certain precision regarding the size of the bars and spaces. When bar code symbols are printed ‘out of spec’ it limits the ability of scanners to ‘see’ and decode the alphanumeric information contained in the bar code. Years ago scanning bar code symbols was hard. One of the best scanners was the Intermec 1545; a hand scanner that, if the symbol was ‘in spec’ (cleanly printed) could scan about 6 to 8 inches away. Recently I saw a large format bar code scanned by an advanced imager from over 60 feet away.
